Claying & Decontamination

Paint Surface

Your vehicle is exposed to airborne pollutants. Brake dust, industrial fallout, acid rain deposits and rail dust all can adhere to your vehicle. These contaminants often contain metal particulates, which accounts for the ease with which they penetrate the clear coat to attack the paint below. These contaminants then oxidize, and they allow rust to spread beneath the clear coat. And the paint surface becomes rough underhand even though these may be microscopic. The vehicle loses its smoothness and clarity on what may otherwise be a freshly cleaned car. Unfortunately, there is not a lot that we can do to avoid these main contaminants and they can become firmly bonded to the paint surface and then begin the process of corrosion and expansion, which distorts and damages the paint film. It cannot be removed by a normal washing or cleaning and you need to do claying and other decontamination techniques to remove them.

Claying

Detailing clay bars help you to remove surface contaminants like tar, insects, road grime, oxidation, rust, industrial fallout etc. from your car body. While claying, the clay glides along the surface of the car paint and grabs anything that protrudes from the surface. The particle sticks to the clay and is therefore removed from the vehicle. The surface being clayed should always be wet with clay lubricant to prevent loose debris from scratching the vehicle.

Medium Angelwax ClaybarWe recommend the claying twice a year, or before you polish the paint. If your car is subject to industrial areas or heavily contaminated areas, using a clay bar more often may be required.

Used properly, detailing clay is completely safe and nonabrasive. It’s a much better option than polishing to remove these contaminants because clay doesn’t remove any paint.

Clay lubes are used as a lubricant during claying to protect the paint from marring. Many use a quick detailer as clay lube; it’s recommended to use one that has some cleaning power and little or no protective properties. This will help to loosen the embedded contamination from the paint while claying. Gyeon Q2M ClayLube is a good clay lube because it has extreme slickness which reduces friction and prevents the clay from ‘grabbing’ and marring the surface; instead, the clay will slip over the surface to reveal smooth paint.

WHAT ALL DETAILING CLAY CAN REMOVE?

Vehicles are exposed to assault from airborne pollutants. Tiny orange spots today, total paint system failure tomorrow! Detailing clay removes these contaminants in order to keep the paint healthy and vibrant.

Detailing Clay also removes stubborn tree sap, tar spots, and bug remains. Detailing clay works wonder on glass as well. Try some next time you’re washing your windows. You’ll be amazed at the results!

Various grades are available on the market again as standard clay bars and if you would like to use this but never clayed before I would recommend the fine grade to minimise the risk of marring.

How to check whether claying is required or not?

The Bag Test: There’s a simple test that will indicate whether or not you need to clay. Wash and dry your vehicle, put a plastic sandwich bag over your hand and lightly rub your fingertips over the paint. If it feels gritty or rough, your paint is contaminated.

Process

1. Wash and dry your vehicle. 2. Spray a small area with clay lubricant (like Gyeon Q2M ClayLube), no bigger than 2 square feet. Claying 3. Gently rub the Gyeon Clay bar back and forth across the wet area. It will grab at first. This means that it is pulling contaminants out of the paint. When it glides freely, the paint is clean. 4. Wipe the area with a microfiber towel and use the Gyeon Q2M ClayLube to remove any clay residue. Rub your fingers across the paint now; it should be as smooth as glass. If it’s not, repeat the process. Reshape the clay bar as needed to expose a clean surface. Keep the clay well-lubricated. 5. Continue these steps until you’ve clayed the entire vehicle. Gyeon Clay does a marvellous job on glass and chrome, too. 6. Store the clay bar in its original case if possible, or in an airtight plastic bag. Spray it with the lubricant to keep it moist. 7. Always follow claying with a wax or sealant. Gyeon Clay will remove existing wax and may leave tiny holes where contaminants have been removed. They must be sealed in order to protect the paint from corrosion.

NOTE: To optimize both the quality of your claying and the clay’s useful life, avoid soap and water as a lubricant. They will prematurely deteriorate today’s clay compounds. Use only clay lubricants. Discard the clay if you drop them on the ground as it can grab the grits and sand particle which will scratch the paint if you use them again on the paint surface. Apart from the traditional clay bars, we have a range of synthetic clay bars and clay towels. The main advantages of these are the life, a traditional clay bar is only good for 5 to 10 cars, but these synthetic ones can do around 80% more cars, and reusability, even if you drop them you can get them washed and can be reused.

Iron Fallouts and Tar spots Removal

Iron Decontamination & Car wheel cleaningIron contaminants can be accumulated from harsh ferrous deposits such as brake dust and rail dust, without proper removal and decontamination can lead to paint clear coat failure and rust. Removing these dangerous iron contaminants are now very easy with our iron removers like Gyeon Q2M Iron.

The usage of Gyeon Q2M Iron is fairly simpler, spray on; wait and you will see the product change to a purple colour, then rinse off with water. Never allow this to dry on the page. Gyeon Q2M Iron is PH-neutral and also can be used along with clay thus you can combine claying and Iron decontamination together and save time.

Vehicles usually collect large amounts of tar and asphalt contamination during everyday use. Tar Removers like Gyeon Q2M Tar is easy to use and literally are a spray on, wait and then wipe off the product. These are generally safe to use on all areas of the car.

Washing

Washing your car/bike regularly helps you to remove all the surface contaminants which can affect paint surface and damage it eventually, such as dust, dirt, bugs, road salt and iron particles. Washing the car/bike once a week is recommended, for a daily maintenance you can use Waterless Wash technique or Quick Detailing (QD) using Waterless Wash shampoos or Quick Detailing products (such as Gyeon Q2M Cure).

It is also very important to use proper techniques and tools for washing & maintenance; else it can harm your paint surface. Swirls
The swirls (circular scratches) are mainly inflicted due to improper washing & maintenance process, so it’s as simple as that improper cleaning technique itself can damage the paint of your car/bike!

If you are using hair shampoo or any other detergents to wash the car/bike, then use them for their intended use and get a good PH-neutral shampoo like Gyeon Q2M Bathe. If you are using any sponges or chamois then upgrade to a good wash mitt (microfiber or lamb’s wool) and drying towel, else the sands get trapped between the sponge/chamois and your paintwork and create damages.

When you wash, always clean the tyres and wheels first as the dirt and wheel cleaner liquid may splash onto the vehicle and you can easily wash it away when you wash the car next. Please refer our Wheel & Tyre Care section to know about the tyre & wheel maintenance details.

The washing can be done using a pressure washer which can reduce the risk of inflicting swirls further down, but those don’t have a pressure washer can follow two-bucket method.

If you are using a pressure washer, you can pre-wash with snow foam using a foam shampoo. Most of the cheap foam shampoos available in the markets are PH-heavy, so beware else they could remove the wax/sealants/coatings on your car/bike or weaken them. Use only PH-neutral foam shampoo (like Gyeon Q2M Foam) if you have any protection (wax/sealants/coatings) on your car/bike.

This helps to soften dirt and any larger particles that are on the paintwork and wheels and draw them away from the surface, in effect an initial touch-less wash. You can leave the foam to cling to the car and soak for around 5 to 8 minutes depending on the weather/temperature at the time. The advantage of this is that you will remove more dirt and once rinsed off using a pressure washer this minimises the risk of inflicting marring and fine scratches rather than going straight at it with your wash mitt and grinding it into the car/bike paint.

What’s Microfiber?

Microfiber

Microfiber is made by blending two fibers, polyester and polyamide. The polyester gives the material strength and durability, the polyamide gives the microfiber a softer, silkier texture and allows the fabric to be tremendously absorbent and quick drying.

Microfiber or microfibre is synthetic fiber is 1/100th the diameter of a human hair and 1/20th the diameter of a strand of silk. The quality of a microfiber depends on the blend ratio of the polyester and polyamide.

Microfiber towel is a must tool in both DIY Car care and professional car care or car detailing and water-less washing, Quick detailing (QD) needs a good microfiber towel.

Types of Microfiber Towels

There are different types of towels based on their usage.

1. Cleaning (All Purpose) Towels

The low-cost microfiber towels fall into this category, with weight between 200 -300 gsm and a 80-20 blend of polyster and polymide. These are used for cleaning exterior or interior and we have good collections of cleaning towels.

2. Buffing Towels

These are plush towels with a weight ranging from 250 to 400 gsm and with either 75-25 or 70-30 blend of polyster and polymide. These towels can be used for quick detailing, wax removing, buffing etc. Find our buffing towels here.

3. Drying Towels

Drying towels are used to dry the car after the wash because these types of towels having very high water absorbency and mostly in waffle weave pattern. They will not be as soft as normal microfiber towels and normally of 80-20 blend.

4. Glass towels

Glass towels are also having the waffle weave pattern but the structure is tweaked more to clean than dry and gives a streak free clean.

5. Suede Towels

Suede towels are 100% lint-free super soft cloths with ultra-sonic cut edges and ideal for removing residue of coatings.

Microfiber Care

Remember to wash the towels before the first use.
They can be machine-washed or hand-washed.
Do not wash Microfiber products with fabric softener, fabric Softener will clog the micro-pours in the microfiber fabric that suck up water and dust.
Do not use bleach, bleach will break down and erode the integrity of the split microfiber strands, your towels will lose their absorbency, and dust clinging ability, they will become rough and ineffective.
Don’t dry too hot, microfiber is like a plastic. If you heat it up too much it will melt, and will lose cleaning effectiveness, machine wash up to 60 Degree is normally fine.

Paint Protection

Waxes

Waxes can be made from a natural wax, usually Brazilian carnauba which is rock hard in its natural form. Generally, waxes contain natural ingredients that protect the paint add gloss and depth to the paint also, bead water nicely.

The main drawback of carnauba waxes is that it does not last as long as a synthetic sealant, it lasts only approximately 6 to 8 weeks. It also attracts dust, but nothing can beat the wet-look it provides.

Paint Sealants

Sealants contain man-made or synthetic ingredients, which last longer, they are easy to apply, and there’s nothing natural about them. A paint sealant is made of polymers, which are composed of tens of thousands of synthetic particles that are linked together. When a sealant bonds to your vehicle’s paint, it forms a rigid shell. They are glossy and slick, but may not have the warmth and depth of a carnauba wax. But the advantage of a paint sealant is the durability. A premium paint sealant can last 4 to 6 months, sometimes longer and typically wipe on and off very easily.

Coatings

Coatings are synthetic chemicals made of a Silica or a Quartz-Silane-based compound. They are considered permanent coatings because they cannot be removed unless you remove them by compounding/polishing or you purposefully neglect them.

Nano coatings are sealants with better chemistry thus they form stronger bonds at the molecular level and last longer with a durability > 12 months. Ceramic coatings are the most difficult to apply but will last the longest and are typically harder and more durable than your paint’s clear coat, but they can still be scratched and swirled and if that happens, they must be compounded and polished like a normal clear coat.

Ceramic coatings can be layered as well, these layering may help to have even-layer of coating and get more thickness. You can have a maximum of 3-4 layers, layering beyond this may not make much sense and proved as a waste of money and product, now there are new generation coatings available in the market which can achieve better thickness even in single layer. The the actual point here is that how much thickness you get on the paint? More layers may not actually make much sense if it’s not a substantial thickness and it may be a drawback of a coating to add more thickness to the payment rather than any advantage,  often the layering is used as a marketing gimmick by many brands.

Types of Glass Coatings

Glass-based coatings can be broadly divided into two categories: quartz-silane based coatings and silica-based coatings.

The quartz-silane-based glass coating provides very high gloss and strong durability. It protects the car body by creating a cured coating of silica on the car’s surface. However, it takes about three weeks for the coating to be fully cured, which is a drawback.

The silica-based glass coating is fixed to a silicon polymer molecule. Its durability and water repellency is inferior compared to the quartz-silane-based.

Hybrid Coating

The new types of glass coatings are hybrids, adding a silicone resin layer to the existing glass layer to change the hydrophilic (attracts water) trait of glass to hydrophobic, thus creating a strong water repellent product.

Paint correction is all about removing the defects from the paint surface such as scratches, swirls, orange peel etc. The tools, techniques used will be based on the severity of the defect. We will discuss about these in detail below.

ORANGE PEEL

What’s Orange Peel

Orange PeelThe orange peel is a textured imperfection in a paint job and is textured like the skin of an orange; this requires smoothing of the surface by wet sanding through the clear coat and pigment layer. The surface will appear bumpy and won’t reflect perfectly. Mostly, the orange peel used to appear on panels that have been repainted, but it can also come straight from the manufacturer in some cases. The orange peel effect is caused by premature evaporation of thinner, incorrect spray gun setup (ie. low air pressure or incorrect nozzle), spraying at an angle other than perpendicularly, or applying excessive paint. And most of the time orange peel is happened because of the substandard painting job.

How to remove Orange Peel

Removing orange peel is a complex process and require special techniques, tools and process. We have these special tools for removing orange peel defect from paint. Easy way to remove orange peel is to use denim and velvet pad and aggressive compounds. Wet sanding is the widely followed process though it requires experience and expertise.

Wet sanding

Orange Peel RemovalWet sanding can be done using hand or machines, sanding papers are used for hand sanding and sanding discs are used for machine sanding. Sanding papers/discs are identified by grit numbers normally ranging from 400 to 3000, where lower number being most aggressive and higher numbered ones are the less aggressive. Wet sanding should be followed by compounding which can remove the sanding marks created by the sanding process. This ensures the finish and clarity to the paint work.

Orange peel can be easily removed using GreenZ XtremeCut Compound 350 with GreenZ Denim Pad on rotary polisher. GreenZ OrangePeelRemovalKit

This BMW X1 owner, a senior executive in an IT major came to us with a typical problem, due to insufficient covered parking at his office, his car has to be parked underneath trees for 8-10 hours a day, and lots of tree saps and tiny berries would fall on the car and because of that lots of staining and thus paint would quickly become dull.

As a complete auto-care brand, we also provide bespoke solution to our customer’s car care problems. And our service team visited the site and after the survey we proposed a solution towards applying PPF on his whole car for a durable and long-lasting solution as the wax or sealants or ceramic coating might not fit due to this extreme condition.

BMW X1 was washed using Gyeon Q2M Foam, then cleaned the tyres and wheels using GreenZ APC and done the decontamination using our Clay and Gyeon Q2M Iron & Gyeon Q2M Tar.

Paint corrected using GreenZ Heavy Cut Compound 600 with Orange pad and finished using GreenZ Ultra Finish Polish 4500

After wiping with GreenZ All Purpose Microfiber Towel , Cleaned the polish residue with Gyeon Q2M Prep

Our experienced PPF technician installed GreenZ Infinity Shield GOLD PPF, which is self-healing on the paint surface carefully without having any stretch marks and any other defects.

Benefits of Car Detailing

Ageing is an inevitable natural process and it’s applicable to our vehicles as well. Car Detailing removes the ageing signs and helps to slow-down the ageing process.

What’s Car Detailing?

Car Detailing is a process to restore the beauty of a car by removing the imperfections and defects on the car body surfaces such as painted surface, tyres and wheels, plastic parts, interiors like dashboard, seats, door trims etc.

Car detailers use polishing and cleaning processes to achieve the perfect finish without affecting the health of the vehicles. Indiscriminate paint correction can affect the paint thickness, hence a good detailer will always understand the polish-ability of the car and plan the polishing strategy.

Unlike many think, detailing is not just polishing, it’s much beyond that.

Why to Protect the Car?

Car Detailing could bring back the lost-glory of your car, but then what next? how do you preserve the look? The answer is to seal the surface from external environment by applying wax or sealants or ceramic coating or PPF etc.

Choosing the right protection which suits your requirement and pocket is also very important and never compromise the quality over cost.

What’s Ceramic Coating?

Ceramic Coatings are synthetic chemicals made out of Silica or Quartz-Silane-based compound which make chemical bonding with paint molecules. Ceramic coatings are harder (9H hardness) compared to other paint protection products such as waxes or sealants.

Ceramic coatings are used to protect the surfaces after a proper detailing and it’s like laminating a nice foto taken by photographer using his photography skill.

GreenZ Car Care introduced ceramic coating in India, but now the market is changed a lot and huge inflow of brands and low-quality products made the market really terrible. Customers are now confused on which to go for and sometimes fall in the trap of 8-10 layers and 10H hypes created by recent ceramic coating sellers. Always choose experienced detailers who use quality product and follow proper process and offer better after-installation maintenance package.

Actor Tovino Thomas’s Audi Q7 | GreenZ Infinity Coat Silver by Our Kottayam Center in Kerala

Tovino Thomas is one of the very popular actor in Malayalam film industry, he contacted us to reclaim the beauty of his beast Audi Q7. Our detailing process will be driven by four phases such as Interaction Phase, Inspection Phase, Planing Phase and Execution Phase.

During the Interaction phase with Tovino Thomas, it was confirmed that the car has lots of swirls and scratches, and he confessed that due to his busy schedules, depended automatic car washing centres for washing the car and their love made those paint defects like swirls and scratches. When you wash your cars in automatic car washing centres while it cleans your car, it also induces some reasonable amount of swirls on the car body, so be aware about this fact!

While our Inspection phase, we checked the thickness of the paint using our paint thickness gauge (this will help us to know the polishability of the paint, most of the  detailers skip this process and end-up in removing the clear coat left on the paint without noticing), we found that some panels were repainted and that also created some other issues on other panels – severe overspray on many places. On the bonnet we found lots of deep scratches which was one of the major concern for Mr Tovino Thomas and severe orange peel was there on almost everywhere (Please check our paint correction guide to know more about orange peel).  The car was contaminated with tar, water-spots and carbon deposits.

We completed our inspection of Tovino’s car with a conclusion that it requires a good paint correction to get rid of the swirls and scratches, it also require deep interior detailing as the interior was kind of neglected. Normally Audi car’s used to paint with water-based paints and topped-up with Glasurit clear coat from Germany, they are hard paints.

During our Planning phase our strategy finalised for this car was GreenZ XtremeCut Compound 350 with GreenZ Denim Pad to remove orange peel and deep scratches. To remove  Severe scratches, we planned to use GreenZ XtremeCut Compound 350 along with our GreenZ Hybrid White Heavy Cutting Foam Pad

Then use GreenZ Heavy Cut Compound 600 with our GreenZ Hybrid Orange Medium Cutting Foam Pad to remove swrils and minor and medium scratches. Finaly use our GreenZ UltraFinish Polish 4500 and GreenZ Hybrid Black Finishing Foam Pad on a DA polisher which will bring mirror finish for the paint surface. Unlike our competitions, the excellent combination of our compounds and pads enable us to use two-step correction in most of the situations and save a lots of clear coat on our customers cars.

The overspray was taken out using Gyeon Q²M CLAY and used  Gyeon Q²M TAR and  Gyeon Q²M IRON for decontamination.

We used Gyeon Quartz’s Gyeon Q² Mohs which is phps-based glass coating and the hardest coating available in the market which is 9H certified by Korean agency KTR (Korean Testing & Research Institute) and Singapore agency SGS.
